Rangefinders for collision avoidance

Hey everyone,

So I'm using two EZ1 rangefinders (ultrasonics from Magnetix) for collision avoidance.

I was wondering what the best setup would be? I've seen them criss-crossed on the front before - not sure why. Any explanations and suggestions in this area would be most appreciated.
