U.S.A. is banning incandescents now too. Reminds me of a cartoon, showing a sign in a park... "Freedom Day Celebration. No parking, no alcoholic beverages, no pets, no coolers, no smoking, no frisbees, no golfing..."

For a dollar or two, get a high wattage resistor. Figure the wattage you want and your line votage (in volts). Solve W = VI to get I (current in amps). Then Solve V=IR to get the Resistance you need (in ohms). Should not burn out, right? You just need to insulate the wire/etc leads to the resistor, to keep little critters safe, and check that the heat does not deteriorate that.

Perhaps we should ban all resistors, because they use power and give NO light! Cheers

HALOGEN!!!they're bright and they give out a good amount of heat, also you can switch out different UV filters to adjust the amount of UV light you're giving them. Or you could do nature and your animals a big favor and release them in the WILD like they're supposed to be.

News reports say that it mandates replacing most common incandescent lamps with fluorescents by 2014. No mention of Halogen lamps. Let's see how that plays after a few fluorescents catch fire when arbitrarily installed in dimmers.

The bill also could cause much of the 36.8 million acre long-term Conservation Reserve to be converted to corn production. Might be another battle there, too, when the Farm Bill gets debated.

Can't you use LED clusters?

I would hope they are keeping the specialised incandescent lamps used in disco effects and projectors if a suitable more energy efficient alternative isn't available.

It would be so easy and cheap to switch everything over to LED's. Mix in some White and Yellows, with a small covert transformer that you could pull from a wall wart and you now have a simple LED Light. Just solder the components into a screw lightbulb socket.

Since "uprating" most of my house bulbs to energy saving bulbs, my boiler has been working extra hard to supply the extra heat needed to keep the house warm.

My boiler is probably only around 70% efficient while my bulbs are 100% efficient. What I dont use as light I use as heat.

In hot weather the days are longer and the lights aren't used much anyway - it all balances itself out.

Those specialized lamps in projectors are halogen. They probably aren't considered "common incandescents". They're about twice as efficient.

I bought some compact fluorescent lights on sale and got some for free from my electrical utility company. Then they were recalled and replaced. The original ones caught on fire then if they were in a high fixture they dripped burning plastic all over the place. My son saw one of mine smoking and quickly turned it off.

The defective bulbs were made in China and the maufacturer used a certification sticker number belonging to another company. Counterfeit cheap junk.

California would be the only one to really take initative, since the Arnold Swartzenagger is the Governator. He really changes a lot of laws to make california a Role Model. Michigan's economy is just so bad, it cant afford to do much, that is why Michigan is always lagging on laws for them to change.

Lets Be honest. It's simple economics the world is run on money.

I used to be a TV/Video engineer but I got out before It was uneconomical to have items repaired.

I am still self employed but in a much more lucrative electronic field. People will always need my services and I can still make a living even though I do not do so many repairs anymore ~ It's easier and cheaper to replace items. Some of the transmission and switching units I have to design and Build myself.
