Re. IDC: No commercial crimper needed for a few assemblies. I just use a thin piece of metal with a small slot to clear the metal bars in the connector that do the insulation displacement. In a pinch (like with a 1.5 mm connector recently), I just use a narrow jeweler's screwdriver and press between the bars. The metal can't be too thin, or it cuts into the insulation itself. Again, think of a blade screwdriver with a blade that is about the same thickness as the gauge of wire being pressed into the connector and thinner than the wire+insulation diameter.
Hobby servo connectors will also carry 1 A, but you will need a cheap (about $12) crimper.
