It would prevent EMF spikes as part of a snubber circuit. The cathode would probably then lead to a resistor and capacitor in parallel which would absorb the high voltage induction spikes from the motor.
I've searched a little bit for this Part.
It seems to be a ESAD85-009R - Schottky Barrier Diode.
