I was wondering what exactly a solenoid is and what it can do or does do. Also how it works, as in if you supply a specific current/voltage or whatever will it pull/push ( or whatever it does).

any help appreciated.

regards

If i supply the appropriate voltage/current, will this activate the solenoid or does it need extra components?? solenoid do push or pull right?

thx

No, you don't normally need extra components - you would normally apply a DC voltage to it, as AC would cause it to be constantly reversing it's poles. Some solenoids, however, are designed for AC use.
