I have a 16x2 I know I want it to be connected to my PC and I will be putting it in my floppy drive bay.

But I have a question since I've never used this type before I'm unsure how to get it to work right..

I do have the data sheet for it which connection should I use for connecting to the pc?

I was going to use the program LCDsmartie if anyone heard of that program before.

Here is the Pin out for the Display.

Pin No. Symbol Level Description
1 VSS 0V Ground
2 VDD 5.0V Supply Voltage for logic
3 ※VBT (Variable) Operating voltage for PLED Brightness adjhstment
4 RS H/L H: DATA, L: Instruction code
5 R/W H/L H: Read(MPU→ Module) L: Write(MPU→ Module)
6 E H,H→ L Chip enable signal
7 DB0 H/L Data bit 0
8 DB1 H/L Data bit 1
9 DB2 H/L Data bit 2
10 DB3 H/L Data bit 3
11 DB4 H/L Data bit 4
12 DB5 H/L Data bit 5
13 DB6 H/L Data bit 6
14 DB7 H/L Data bit 7

I hope someone could help it's been sitting in my bin for a little over a year.

Looks like the standard 14-pin connection that a 16x2 LCD uses.

You should be able to find a project that operates a 16x2 LCD from the parallel port.

what about serial? since my system does not have a parallel port or serial could I use a USb to serial cable?

Look for any project that uses a 16x2 LCD. A search of the net shows me that there are several of them. Unfortunately none of them appear to be simple.

for usb to serial have a look here: USB IC's

you would then need to be able to program a PIC/Atmel chip and do the nessasary routines for controlling the pic.
