Using a CD4017 to drive a 7 Segment LCD display

Hello everyone! I have up to now, only built counters and timers using TTL IC's. I always used a TTL decade counter to drive a 7 segment decoder IC, and from the decoder to the & segment display.

Very foolishy I bought some 4017 counters and 4511 decoders, thinking that the setup would be the same.

I'm used to counters having Q^0, Q^1, Q^2, and Q^3 outputs, which would drive the decoders, but the 4017 has outputs from A to G, which I don't know what to do with.

If the 4017 outputs are already "decoded", I'm totally guessing that I don't need "decoder" IC's (4511), but how the h*ll do you get the 4017 to drive a standard 7 seg display?


Your help would be GREATLY appreciated!
 
The 4517 is a decade counter with 10 outputs for counts 0 through 9. It can't readily be used to control a 7-segment display.

A 4026 is a decade counter that will directly drive a 7-segment LED display.

A 4054 or 4055 will decode BCD to 7-segment LCD

The 4511 will drive an LED display, not an LCD.
 
Thanks for that crutschow! I'll just use 4510 counters to drive 4511 decoders to drive my LED displays.

I think you meant "4017".... :)

The 4543 will decode BCD to 7-segment and drive LCD's or LED's (either common anode or common cathode).
It's a pretty versatile display driver.
