I have a friend with this home stereo cd player and whenever he is playing the radio or a cd and he turns the volume up about half way up,it goes into protect mode and mute the speakers. There is a fan at the rear of the unit and its working fine. Any ideas are welcome

I would start by checking the speakers, if they are the wrong impedance it may cause the amp to go into self protection mode.

It sounds like the speakers connected to it could have a lower impedance than what the amplifier is designed to drive. This means that it will shut down if the volume is turned up too high.
