The Sensor

Hello,
If i wanna to make a sensor and receiver where if sensor find any obstacle in its way it will move in certain distances .As, on that time receiver does not senses it will give certain results (as lighting LED).

So, what kind of Sensor i can use and how will i make this receiver .
