speech to word conversion

I want to do a project using pc which is converting our speech from a microphone to word microsoft office file ,so is that possible anyway? what is the mechanism of generating such program?

You can buy various programmes that do it - isn't one called 'Dragon'?.

It appears that Windows XP already has this capability.

yeah but we want to do it by ourselves and also our native language is arabic so we need to convert arabic words into text.Designing the software and hardware is what required here not as pre-done work.

We need the first step to be into this kind of project so any clue or opinion wil be very appreciated.

Have you done a Google search on speech recognition technology? The Wikipedia entry points to several links.

It is just about possible to recognise words using a microcontroller,
See this final year project from Cornell University:

They wanted full sentence recognition, but this was to much to do with just a microcontroller.

Have a Google for open source speech recognition software, then you can improve the existing project, contribute to the community and save yourself from starting from scratch.
