Simple Winch Project

There is a simple product I would like to try and build at home. I just don't know the parts I need to source, or which parts are compatible with which.
Other than building a few parallel lighting circuits, I have minimal electronics experience.

I need a variable speed controller, must be battery powered. And a small motor linked to the controller, which ideally will run forwards and backwards.
The motor would serve as a simple winch, just reeling cable in or letting it out slowly. There would be a couple of KGs on the other end of the cable, so the strength of the motor/rod may be an issue.

I'm looking online at a bunch of motors and controllers, not knowing which go together, or which are adaptable to run off battery power.
I know this is a fairly straightforward concept, compared to other threads I've seen on here, so hopefully someone could send me a shopping list of potential items to start on this set-up.

Any help appreciated!

Welcome to the forum, if you post some links of the motors/controllers you'll get some opinions.

If you need this 'winch' to hold the load, you need a worm gear box. Any other type of gear box will need a very high gear ratio (very slow movement) to be able to hold a load. A worm gear is very hard, if not impossible, to 'back drive'. Pinon type gear trains (of low ratios) will back drive very easy.
