Hey Guys,
Need some advice on what type of sensor best suited for measuring the level of solid objects in a bin. Also type of sensor to sense the opening and closing of a door.

Pardon my ignorance, I am but a novice...

How big is the bin , whats in it etc etc describe the problem witha bit more detail.
Can u drill holes in the container or is this a look down application, how far down do u need to sense ???

You can fit Ultrasonic Tx/Rx on the bin's lid (if it has one). Using it you can accurately measure the distance of filled material from lid and this can accurately give the idea how much space is left in it.

Here is one circuit using PIC.
