I am interesting in building a screen-in-screen display for a home TV in which I can control the message. That is, something like on-screen programming with the remote or the ticker-tape display that is used for station messages during regular programming.

My search engine yielded a surprisingly small number of useful hits related to the “how to.” One hit pointed to a couple of commercial products, Bob-4 at http://www.decadenet.com and a unit for displaying caller ID at http://www.smarthome.com . The Bob-4 unit will probably do what I want to do, but presents primarily an exercise in programming. I am interested more in the electronic aspects of it.

The terms genlock and chromakey were presented, but I did not find “how to” that a hobbyist could follow by searching on those terms. Are the electronis too complex for hobbyists or are there more productive search terms I should be using?

Any help or pointers of where to look would be appreciated. This is not a final year school project. I am decades past that point :)
