I recall seeing a posting for running a PIC 16F675 at max spec voltage (6.5V).
It was mentioned the onboard oscillator was off but would there be any other side effects?
It is in the absolute maximum ratings section of the datasheet as 6.5V but the standard spec says 5.5V

The absolute max rating is not meant for any normal operation. What it meant is the device could be damaged if the voltage excursion ever goes higher than the absolute max rating, albeit momentary.
The max operating voltage is of course 5.5V which is clearly stated in the datasheet.
I also would like to run a PIC from 4 AA batteries (NiMH would be fine at 5v) but Alkaline would be 6. An inline diode should work like a charm but there is still no regulation.
why not run off of 3 alkalines? 4.5 is a reasonable voltage.
If you want longer battery life, why not build a small switcher based ps. lots of chips out there for that. Then you can truely suck those alkalines dry. Or if you built a boost regulator, you can run on 2 batteries for a more compact package.
