Why RJ45 connectores wired with crossed pairs.

If only the colour code is concern, it can be wired as
1,2 brown -brown/white
3,4 orange-orange/white
5,6 blue-blue/white
7,8 green-green/white
But as athumb of rule orang/white and blue/white are cross connected.
what is the reason.
Are the pines (1 to 8) assigned to any function similar to RS323 pin connections.
eg: RS232 pin2 Tx
