Most NPN small signal transistors are ok, eg BC337/338 BC546/7/8/9 MPSA06 2N2222 2N3643 2N4401 2N5088 2N3904..... The list keeps going... Pretty much any small transistor which has a C-E voltage rating of 45V or greater and a continuous collector current rating of at least 500mA.
