Project Help. Video, Ethernet

Hi, im new to these forums, over the summer I want to build a project. What do you think to these ideas/what would you use to build them?

1) Webcam recorder. Ultimate aim to build a device that records video and stores it. Hopefully ill be able to program it to only record video from motion detection.

2) A micro controller to send data through Ethernet to a computer ect.

How much experience do you have jimick? Education? Better off buying an x10 camera and ftp images to your computer.
