Pre + filter + Amp - assorted questions

Radio and TV stations use a compressor circuit to cut loud sounds and boost faint sounds so that the average level is always too loud. But it has the problem of producing audible gain pumping where the background music jumps up and down by the beat of the music or causes distortion. I hate the sounds produced by a compressor circuit because the sound is not natural.

Most volume controls are logarithmic and have what is called "an audio taper" so that when they are turned down from maximum to half then the volume is reduced very much not just a little.
