I found if you let PK3 connect and download from MPLABX ver 3.40 and above ( possibly earlier to ) , it wont then work on PK3 standalone ? think its something to do level of PK3 FW , Had to take it back to MPLAB 8xx and load earlier version then worked a treat ..
