North or South Pole sensing Proximity or read switches

Hello everyone,

I would like to understand how this gate opener's limits work.
They use North and South pole magnets that activate either close or open limit switches what I can not figure out is what kind of switches can discriminate between magnet poles?

I agree with Max. I have used Hall effect sensors which respond to a N and S pole. Years ago I used some made by Allegro as well as Honeywell.
