Those look like the bulk surplus dealers. If the part is obsolete and that difficult to obtain it's probably not worth even looking at the data sheet but thank you very much for going to the trouble anyway...

The op lives in Iowa. Is that anywhere near Michigan? (I don't have a US map handy). All I know is that there's a big ocean between him and me!

Just checked and I have a couple '628A chips. I would be happy to send him a programmed chip (for free) if he doesn't mind waiting about ten days to get it. I'll do it when I get back in town next weekend and have wifee post it the following Monday or Tuesday. The ICM7218 is available from Digi-key. They will ship over the ocean.

You could use a MAX7219, this is a SPI based device, that can provide alpha-numeric (limited) capability to a seven segment display. The device also has SPI commands to adjust the brightness of the segments.

The drawback is you need to have a micro-controller like a PIC to drive it, but you always develop a PC based one using the printer port (LPT).

Both the ICM7218 & MAX7219 would generally require a microcontroller. The MC14495 wouldn't.
