Hi,

My Compaq power supply failed to to turn on. It has 5V standby, but the power-on lead only has 0.4V. All the leads show 0V with respect the common ground (black lead). I tried to ground the power-on lead and attached a load to the 5V lead, it is still off. I open the case, I don't see any burnt or overheat sign. Does anyone has any suggesetion to help me fix the problem.

Thanks!

Dan

A common problem on many power supplies is the startup resistor (or resistors), this provides enough power for the PSU to start. Look for resistors in the 100's of kilohms and check them with a meter.

Be very aware that such failures often leave the large electrolytic fully charged!.
