linux wm conflicts with Eagle

I'm having a heckuva time here, hopefully the linux/unix gurus out there can help!

I recently put together a machine, and went with ubuntu linux instead of windows. I'm trying hard to make it work rather than give up and go with windows!

when I'm drawing in eagle, often times I like to use the ALT key to switch to the fine grid mode when routing a trace or moving a part. I'm having a few problems however:

1) I hold down alt first, I can't left click
2) If I click first to move the part, and then hold down ALT, I can't click to release the part unless I let go of ALT, and then the part snaps back to the coarse grid
3) I can't get the traces to snap to their connection points ... in windows this happened almost automaticly, or sometimes I could help it by holding ALT while double clicking, no dice under gnome

any ideas? I'm gonna try some differnet window managers but I'm skeptical!

Alt keys are usually used by the window manager - being able to move windows around by alt-clicking anywhere in the window is a really useful feature. Gnome should have some control panel settings - worst case there's the "gconf-editor" which you can use to modify the registry-like settings.

Most window managers use the alt key for various nefarious purposes, so you'll have to check the WM documentation to see if there is a workaround.
