Does anyone know how I might have a row of LEDs that act as a battery indicator (say 5 in a row and if 1 5th of the battery power was gone only 4 LEDs would be lit).

Series Connection

Hi there,
try to connect them thru a multiplexer having i/p from adc & try some similar stuff using adc/resistor divider for checking app.voltages

the above circuit can be modified to support two variable resistances that allow u to control both the upper as well as the lower limit of voltage to be measured ,refer to the LM3914 datasheeet for the pinouts.
