LCD with Input Function

Im preparing to build the following project:

I have a HD44780 (KS0066) controlled lcd display. I'd like to be able to input characters directly via a keyboard or via an usb controller, NOT OVER THE LPT PORT!

Could anyone help me? :D

USB is too complicated for your kind of project ,
if you dont wanna use the LPT port (i hate it to) just use the serial port!

Use the MAX232, a simple MCU with Rx/Tx serial communication option like the simple AT80c2051 or a PIC than translate the data from the computer and put it to the LCD.

It can be very simple and fun project...
