What is the current should in the IR emitter to have sufficient range (around 15-20 cm) ?

Should a transistor be used to drive the LED?

ur query is vauge still...
20cm is a low range for transmission , (but it depends on the receiver sensitivity anyway..assuming normal receiver).a 555 driving and ir led directly could handle that distance.it is better to use a driver transistor .
