Hi there everyone im new to the forums and pretty much a beginner in electronics.

My grandfather has gone quite deaf and he lives out in the country on a big property. When someone at the gate rings the doorbell, if he is watching tv in the room he cannot hear it.

I wanted to build a project that can flash an LED or light in the bedroom for 20 seconds or so or until a button is pressed to reset it.

I have recently been learning about pics and I have a PICKIT2 programmer. At first I was thinking of just having a transistor attached to the speaker of the doorbell and the microchip filtering out all the noise of it flickering on and off by having code that just leaves a port high for 20 seconds from the first time it turns on. But then I thought there must be an easier way, my knowledge is very limited when it comes to electronics, a cap and transistor maybe? I wouldnt have a clue on any of the specifications needed.

Secondly once I have integrated it simply to the intercom already being used (without ripping it apart) I was thinking of making it wireless, so I would not have to run 2 wires all the way to the bedroom of their quite large house. I have seen a couple products from microchip but once more I am uncertain of the specs.

I apologize if this is very vague, but I hope I can get some simple yet effective ideas :)

I added a big room on the back of my home. There I couldn't hear the old American solid steel and brass doorbell. So I went shopping for another and found a plastic Chinese one at a low cost. It has Helmholst Resonating Chambers behind each brass gong-tube and it is much louder than the American one. It sounds more like a chime than the American one.

Unfortunately a loud siren wouldn't help him especially if the television is on full blast :) a visual que is needed but thank you for the reply.

My grandpa is the same way too! He wont get a hearing aid because he says everyone will see it and think he cant hear! (Everyone already knows!)
Rig up a remote doorbell system like audioguru has but replace the chimes with a shock collar! He will always know when someone is ringing! :D

My grandma gave me this idea a while back because she got tired of yelling at my grandpa so that he would hear her call for him. (She still wants me to build one!) :D

lol everything you are saying sounds very familiar :p I too have been tasked with this project since being able to operate a computer implies a high level understanding of electronics ;) and ofcourse a light that turns on seems very simple :D

You could intercept the power going to the hammer in the doorbell and add some LEDs across it so they flash when the doorbell rings.

hmm not getting many direct answers, but I have made a circuit with my knowledge and parts on hand. Just would like to know of any type of rf transmitter receiver that I could use. Maybe one that has IO ports and whichever you set high on the transmitter gets mimic'd on the receiver? Im not sure if there is something so simple to use but I saw something like this a long time ago. It would have to be of general application and no specialist part for me to be able to get it here - South Africa. Thanks guys

Get a cheap $10.00 remote doorbell (made in China) and connect a pager motor to the output and also a LED. The vibration from the pager motor will alert him. He needs to carry the receiver like a mobile phone.

That's a good idea. But use the output of remote receiver to turn OFF the television with 60sec timer for protecting the television. Use a relay driver with timer.
