In layman't terms What is a Triac?

Can anyone explain to me what a Triac is in Laymens terms. Wikipedia's explanation is a bit confusing to me.
 
A triac is two back-to-back SCR's. An SCR is two back-to-back transistors. A triac is like four transistors arranged in a mirrored, symmetric pattern.
