Identify Component

Does anyone know what the black box is on this 110v dc motor pwm controller?

It is an enclosed or encapsulated circuit board, from the diagram you drew out in a previous post.

It has the small-signal or low voltage part of the speed control system.
 
It will be rather more sophisticated than a 555, with speed and current control and feedback.

It could be a moderately complex analog circuit, or a microcontroller based system.
