How to Measure Force?

digging up a real old threat there :)

sjaguar13 - did you ever complete this project? I'm also looking into building a sensor to measure forces of karate kicks and punches. Doesn't have to give the actual force value, just a numerical value of some sorts so we can keep records of students progress. Nigel's idea seems to be the best - but what sensor would one even look at - they come in ranges of max psi? How much pressure would a punch exert on the air bag? 1psi...100psi?

Any other pointers/tips would be appreciated.

Look at is the list of vendors - go to each vendor and check out what parts they have. Freescale seems to have the cheapest parts though.

PSI will depend on the air bladder that you use to sense things. As for actual physical details, I don't know how to design one off-hand though.
