how many bit are require to make ALU

The AMD2900 series were popular in the 80's. They are known as bit slice ALUs. Just cascade them to give you the required number of bits. They were a ***** to program IIRC but their datasheets may give you a clue and at the time were very fast.

Real fast. We put heat sinks on the parts and over clock them. I think we had 8 bit and 12 bit versions.
