The AMD2900 series were popular in the 80's. They are known as bit slice ALUs. Just cascade them to give you the required number of bits. They were a ***** to program IIRC but their datasheets may give you a clue and at the time were very fast.

Real fast. We put heat sinks on the parts and over clock them. I think we had 8 bit and 12 bit versions.

Yep Happy days. No C++,C# or VB compilers. Those when you had to know the inner workings of adders etc to get by.
