Hi, I'm a bit baffled by those switching mode power supplies found in computers, why need they be so complicated? As I understand it, high frequency + transformer= higher current handling capability, smaller transformer. But then, can't I just rectify the mains voltage, send it through a MOSFET driven by a 555 or something, and send that into the transformer?

Yes, I understand a good deal of the circuitry is to provide other voltages and safety. But still...

Also, what makes a high frequency transformer a high frequency transformer? (Core, windings, what?)

Hi,

Best way is to take a smps primer and go thro' roughly.

therafter take up one manufacturers design data and it will describe the design of smps tranformer design creteria indetail.

they have even calculators for realizing a transformer for a specific need.
