I have a few of those old top hat shaped transistors. There is a little square knob portruding from the side of tha hat's 'brim', I know it id's one of the terminals but I can't remember which one. Is it the emitter or the base ?

Looking at one from the bottom, its circular with 3 terminal wires extending upward. Going in a CW direction, starting from the square identifying knob, there are the 3 terminals on one side of the bottom circle, then a space between the last term. and the knob.

I had to ask, because I've forgotten, and I haven't looked at one for a long time.

Thanks

For TO-5 and TO-18, the most common arrangement is EBC.
