Is it OK for Depletion mode P JFETs to have conventional current flowing through the Gate?

I know that for N JFETs if you do that, the carriers will flow out the Gate instead of the Source and damage the JFET. If it's OK, are there any guidelines I should be aware of?

I haven't used a Jfet with its gate-source forward biased. The datasheet will list its maximum allowed gate current without any damage. It is 50mA for a 2N5019.
