I am hoping to build a reliable and safe fuel gauge (petrol) to replace the existing one in my car.I would like to use the LM3914 to light LEDs progressively as the fuel level varies,by measuring the resisance from the tank sender unit connected to pin 5 of the IC. Also provisions for adjusting the brightness of the display with a small pot.The 2 attachments I've found look promising, providing of course, that they will be safe to use. Any suggestions, welcome.

I found the second diagram when searching on line,so I don't know it's origin. I have looked at the data sheet for the LM3914,there are several options,I'm not sure which one to choose. I am hoping someone has built one that works ok?
