Field sensor - height above PCB

Has anyone used the MC34940: (https://www.electro-tech-online.com/custompdfs/2011/04/MC34940.pdf)

I'm thinking of using as a means of tracking the drill height above a PCB. Advice welcome.

Not saying it is a bad idea. But have you thought about using a PIC with capSense. I was playing with some demo code and it could sense a touch on an insulated wire. Maybe that is not good enough.

I'll have a look at it. I assume it uses the same principle as the MC34390, and all I'd need is a comparator. But the PIC might be a better fit, thanks.

Amazing how cheap the PIC12F1822 is, only $2 AUS. I might just have to get a programmer for it.
