Both are similar; in squaring you raise each of the product terms to the power of 2; in square-rooting you raise each of the product terms to the power of 0.5. squaring: (145ms^-1)^2 = 21025m^2s^-2 squarerooting: (145ms^-1)^0.5 = 12.04m^0.5s^-0.5
