EFD Ferrite Core shape , What for?

Hi,

What is this shape of Ferrite core for? what is the usage? why one side is closed?!

Most of the core is "shielded" to keep the flux inside, and to keep out side from getting in. Something like a pot core. One side is open so the bobbin and wires come out.

I have broke many pot cores bobbins because the opening in the core is too small making the bobbin very weak.
