Do Internet Service Providers give priority to National Sites?

Hi,

when watching a five minute film on YouTube it sometimes takes about 20 minutes to watch it completely with lots of interruptions.

I observed that my stepdaughter uses the national TV channel to watch those fancy comedy shows - without any interruption.

Data transfer speed is a matter of bandwidth as far as I know.

So are national sites given a higher bandwidth?

The Internet is not a straight line from point A to B, and is only as good as it's weakest link, which depending on the hosting site and it's incoming and outgoing bandwidth may be higher or lower than other sites, and these are not always geographically oriented. It depends on who is hosting, who is serving, how many hops there are in between, and ALL of their interconnections. Many higher ends sites have multiple servers not necesarily in the same geographical or network structure on the Internet, and the DNS servers re-directs traffic appropriately depending on the originating IP to optimize bandwidth. However, smaller sites with a single provider may be forced through various network bottlenecks.

But why the heck does Thailand then provide internet service for Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar (former Birma) and Malaysia? :(

When I first went to broadband the 6Meg seemed slower than expected, so I complained to the ISP.
They monitored the line and found that the 'local lines' where not suitable for 6Meg as it was generating so many errors it was making it run slow.

They reduce the rate to 4Meg and its now very fast and trouble free.:)
 
You'd have to ask all the business and political parties involved Boncuk. They've probably done their homework and found that it's cheaper to let someone else do the dirty work and then just lease the lines that they require rather than going through the trouble of setting up their own infrastructure.

Hi Eric,

my connection is wireless using a transponder like modem. The ISP has set up some PCs at their site and those work with a data transfer rate of 8Meg. If I can have 1.3Meg (very seldom) I'd be satisfied. Downloading a 5MB datasheet within two hours is no fun. :mad:

May be the modems are too slow. Talking to people at the ISP nobody knows exactly what's going on and also nobody feels in charge. They just sell. :rolleyes:

You share that same bandwidth with EVERY other user near you. Broadband long distance RF internet is in it's infancy at it's best.

Latency for wireless is pretty bad too, so don't try to play games =)
 
As a matter of interest, I just did a traceroute to this website :D

Quite an intresting route!.
 
I did one also and it took 18 hops to connect to 'freenet.de'

Every connection using more than 10 hops is considered to be slow.
 
I have 15 to that site. I get 16 to yahoo.. 12 to google... Nothing is slow for me at all.
