Hi guys, was looking for somewhere to say hi but could not find anywhere.

Anyway, im after some help with a college project:

To design, build and test a DC motor control system suitable for driving a dc traction motor for use on a miniature railway using pwm

Spec supply 24v dc
Motor: 740w, 24V, DC, permanent magnet traction motor

Speed range of loco: 0-16km/h
Wheel diameter: 140mm

Consider: reversing of motor, regenerative braking, suitable batteries

Thanks in adavnce

I'd talk with your mechanical/machine design counterparts at school but some thoughts that might help:

1. The rate at which you accelerate/decelerate may affect traction.
2. The load on the engine will depend on a number of things that can vary - including incline, number of cars, etc as well as lubrication, among other things.
3. You may want to get some feedback on actual velocity so you can determine things like slip.

What you might end up doing is creating a circuit that drives the motor - making it robust enough to handle anything the motor can throw at it - along with a programmable control system. The control program would likely evolve as you learn how the whole thing behaves. Yes, you could also get the mechanical folks to work with you to simulate the loads on the motor too.

Sounds like fun.

as long as it's there or there abouts, im sure it will be fine.
It would be nice to meet all the design features.

I hope you are planning on using more than one motor. 1 hp isnt that much power.

how much are you weight are you going to be moving?
