Control system for traffic regulation using infrared

I am about to resume my final year in Electronic Engineering and I am required to build a project. I have an idea for a control system that regulates traffic at crossroads. I intend to use infrared transmission and detection across a road such that when the ray is blocked by a vehicle, the system completes a circuit which puts on the GO light. I would like someone to give me ideas on a logic circuit that would trigger a switch (turning it on) and that would in turn be triggered by a break in the infrared transmission/reception circuit.
