Can a 5A Switched Supply Peak at Much Higher Currents?

Are switched mosfet boosts, like this 5A device, designed to handle brief load peaks which are many times higher than it's rated 5A?

The quick answer is no.
However, if there is a large capacitor on the output of the regulator, it may be able to handle large transient loads.
But, the devil is in the detail.

From the data sheet:

You exceed that value at the peril of zapping the device.
And note that the switch current can be larger than the output current, if it's in a boost configuration.
