AVR COntroller

So I"m pretty new to all this stuff and I wa wondering if somone can explain to me what a bootloader is and what role do hex files play in that. Also what is an avr controller, how would I implement this in building a hobby robot.

Hex file is the content (program) you need to "burn" or upload to the microcontroller memory.

Microcontroller is essentially a small computer, so there are many ways you can use it in a hobby robot project.
