A quick question about purpose

Looking at an ST Micro part number 1NK60Z, I see that it has back to back zener diodes between the gate and source. What is the purpose of these?

Over voltage protection and/or static electricity protection.
Will protect positive or negative voltage (forward voltage of zener is like standard diode) so you'll have zener voltage plus 0.6volts (positive or negative).
