Competition (#3) Entry: Canaria Furioso (Canary Simulator) 2010-08-05

The circuit has been designed to simulate a canary “Harzer Roller”. It consists of six timer ICs NE555.

Theory of Operation

When powering up the circuit IC4 (a nonretriggerable monostable oscillator) is triggered by the low output of IC1, thus activating IC5, which – together with IC6 generates a winding up frequency (similar to a siren). P1 controls frequency of IC5 (approx. 20Hz) and P2 controls the frequency of IC6 (approx 1.5KHz), which is modulated by IC5 output into the “CV” input of IC6.

When S1 (TRIGGER) is pushed IC1 becomes active (output H) which in turn switches on IC2, which is an astable oscillator working at about 20Hz. The output of IC2 activates IC3, another astable oscillator working at about 2 KHz, causing a timed (10seconds) tone burst.

When IC1 times out it triggers IC4 which then generates the winding up tone as described when powering up the circuit.

A speaker of 8 to 32 Ohm impedance might be connected to the output. If loudness is too low JP1 might be set for higher volume.

Since the sound generated has no sinusoidal wave shape the sound is considerably ugly – that’s why the circuit’s name is CANARIA FURIOSO.
