i have an old school tektronix scope that i F'd up today. i cleaned the pots and rotary switches with radioshack tv-tuner cleaner/lubricant and now it turns on but nothing on the screen. the can said to wait 5 minutes, but i waited 10. anything i can do about it? thank you in advance!

being an older model, it is most likely just the y-position. It's happened to me before--when you move the wrong pots, it turns and the position goes either way up or way down, and it's not even visible on the screen. Just try to adjust the y-position first and see if it shows up.

Regards

Thats why the newer ones have a beam find button.

i cleaned the contacts best i could. all i get on the screen is a dot. i can move the dot up and down and left to right with the x/y adjustment knobs, but there is no continuous trace on the display.

Well that's a good sign. It shows that it's not broken--just some of the settings are changed. There should be a button or a knob that adjusts the actual movement of the dot. I regret I can't remember what it's called, but it should make it move left-to-right faster and faster the more you turn it. Try fiddling a bit with the knobs. If I had my oscilloscope here, I'd find what it's called, but since I don't I'll do some research and see if I can get back to you on the name.

Good luck!
Regards

[UPDATE] Found it--It's called the TIMEBASE, or TIME/CM. That should adjust the (automatic) movement of the dot. Looks like the bottom right-hand panel in the photo. Try fiddling with those a bit and see what happens ;)

i posted some pics of my adjustments. the wierd thing is that the only time i get the dot on the screen is when the time/div know is all the way counter clockwise in the gray area indicated next to the numbers. i dont get anything at all when its in any of the other positions.anyone have a 3b4 timebase or 3a1 amp for sale?

Put your vert on AC
Put your Horizontal on AC coupled.
Trigger should be on auto.
Then try your time base.

im pretty pissed about this. the scope worked fine(the knobs where scratchy though) till i used this damn radioshack cleaner to clean them up. i tried spraying some rubbing alcohol on the rotary switches to try and clean away any residue this lubricant may have left behind.

Did you try my setting in the last post?
You may have to clean them again but I still think you may have jared something in the cleaning and/or disasembly process.

Keep all that Satanic "tuner cleaner" away from the switches on a Tektronix scope. The timebase switch, especially, have very high-impedance circuitry and any conductivity of the cleaner will kill the sweep. I'd suggest a true cleaning of the areas where you used the cleaner. A good washing with water and detergent, a long rinse with clean tap water and a final dousing with isopropyl alcohol should clean it sufficiently. Then dry it for a couple of days in LOW heat such as your oven with the thermostat turned until the oven just comes on. Or spend a lot of time with a hair dryer on it.
