The Passing of a Dear Friend

Blog entry posted in 'Uncategorised', June 25, 2010.

Perhaps this is a strange place to write an obit for a dog.

Half an hour ago my dear friend Kess passed away while I was sleeping. My wife was at my computer and Kess walked in and died next to her while she typed.

Kess was 10 years old and has suffered from a parasite carried by ticks. Antibiotics extended her life but but did not provide a cure.

We got Kess shortly after I became disabled and she has been my constant companion for all but the few hours I have spent teaching or traveling. The longest we have been apart was two days.

Up to two years of age it was difficult to walk with her in a public place because one person after another would stop to pet her. I have fond memories of a walk through the "Garden of the Gods" in Colorado Springs that took a hour longer then it would have without her admirers.

Kess was a Kesshond, a breed developed by the people living on barges that worked the Dutch canals. These dogs are not know for obedience. In the past six months she learned to "go away". When I gave the word she would leave the room and wait to be called back. You can understand how difficult that must have been, I was holding a cookie.

Kess was the most mild tempered dog I have ever meet and I will miss her more than I care to think about.

I can understand your feelings well, since I'm still in grieve about my best dog which was stolen in Turkey 1984. Hans

    Thanks to both of you.

3v0, I am extremely sorry to hear what happened. Kess sounds like she truly was a remarkable dog who was obedient and loving. I wish you the best! :( Austin

You have my sympathy. Losing a pet is rough. They bring so much into our lives while asking so little in return. A good loyal dog defines unconditional love. Our dogs have never lied to us, stolen from us or taken advantage of us. I can't say the same about people in our lives. Ron

My condolences 3v0. And Ron very well put.

Again thanks. For some reason there is a Kess sized hole in my life :)

Time is the only medicine that can work on sadness, other than that, man has nothing. The irony however, is that man doesn't control time. Hope it gets better for you.

A Mans best friend is what they are and stay 100% devoted regardless. While I write this my little Bichon is curled in to a little ball by my side. Sorry to hear about Kess. Mark

Thanks. Today I removed low gates we had placed to keep her in the shop when the overhead door was open. I had been thinking of doing so for a few days. It was harder then much of the other stuff for some reason. Still have to collect the stray leash or two but that about wraps up the changeover. Kess was deathly scared of thunder and fire crackers. I supposed if she was going to die it was good that she did so prior to the fire works that started just days after her death. I am a firm supporter of personal rights but the effect fire crackers had on Kess has caused me to dislike them. On a even more personal note I am starting to feel better. I expect that this will be my last post to his blog entry. So I would like to again thank all that have read and or replied. And thank all the good people who are now doing so :)

Dog is God spelled backwards, ( read that somewhere )

Hard to read; so much harder to live. That is a tough one 3v0, I'm sure it will take time to get over - if one ever does get over it... Yes, I can see why people would want to give Kess attention. I would have been one of them! My deepest condolences, 3v0. Robert

Things tend to work that Kess will live on in your heart forever, much like losing any loved one. If you are a true dog lover no other dog will replace Kess but in time there will be other dogs. Each will be unique and each will have a personality of its very own. That is the nature of the beast and the cycle of loving and enjoying pets. We have always had dogs, and always adopted dogs. Never less than two around here. When I met my wife she had a dog and I had a dog. Been that way over 20 years now. Time really does heal all wounds but like I said, their memory lives in your heart forever. Yeah, we even have a closet that is home to all their old collars and licenses. Ron

Condolences are in order. Sorry man. Only saw your post now. Pets don't always live long enough. Just when you really get to know them and understand them (and them you) they pass away. Tis life unfortunately. I have this cat that found me around 18 Months ago when it was a Kitten. I fed it, showed it the rules of what happens when it's naughty and so on. It knows for example that it is not even allowed to look...never mind paw/scratch my Lappie screen. Ever. But I am happy every morning when it hops up onto the table my Lappie is on and starts purring...really loudly. Takes one look at the screen and ignores it totally. Then puts it's head down for a scratch. Loves it's forehead to be scratched/rubbed/tickled etc. It's eyes literally roll over. Weirdest pet ever. Never say you cant train a cat to be as obedient as a dog. If not better. As I write this, it's sitting under my chair patiently waiting for food. No noises at all. Cheers
