Thanks LG... New fodder for conspiracy theorists.

Blog entry posted in 'Uncategorised', June 22, 2010.

I've heard a lot of conspiracy theories over the years.... And maybe a good percentage of them have some truth to them, human nature being what it is (especially in those who gravitate towards public office). Today i found out something that made me wonder......
Where i work, we test a lot of Blu-ray players. Most of them now have network (and even wireless) connectivity, so that you can watch You Tube, etc... on your TV. During testing, we set up the player to connect to a network and ping the web to determine whether it's connected or not. We aren't allowed to connect equipment willy-nilly to the company network, so i built a linux box to act as a "virtual" web. this means i have to find out where the player is pinging and tell the linux box to pretend it's that web address, and echo the ping. So while running some tests on various players, i connected an LG Blu-ray player and ran the connectivity test. The LG player was trying to ping www.lge.com (i expected that), and then began pinging www.whitehouse.gov...... WHAT?!?!.... As it turns out ALL LG players ping this address...... My first thought is that LG used addresses that should be reachable about 99.9% of the time. Samsung uses www.worldtime.com and www.worldtimeserver.com, and i haven't seen what other manufacturers use in their firmware yet. After hearing a lot of news this week about how our congresscritters want to have a "Kill Switch" for the internet, and they want to have intrusive controls on broadband providers (and ultimately users), the otherwise innocuous pinging set of an alarm bell in my head.......... Or maybe LG was trying a sly way of overwhelming government servers (up to 10 pings in a second when the machine is turned on and 2 or 3 pings a minute after that times however many players LG has sold...). so... what has our govt done to LG to deserve this????? (like maybe floating all of this draconian legislation?)

Comments invited, whether you are or are not a conspiracy theorist....
