I used UART on those with no issues (no HT12 in between, just the transmitter on the TX of one PIC, and the receiver connected to the RX on the other). I believe the data is encoded/decoded with ASK on the fly with all of those chips?

I think they use manchester encoding/decoding. It transmits ASK though.
