which micro controller to use...??

i need to choose the micro controller for my project which is .....fingerprint recognition for student attendance......the details are as follows

the portable device initially stores the fingerprint images of 100 students

it marks the attendance of the corresponding student .....when used later...... ..this data needs to be transfered to the pc regularly to keep the database of student attendance

i need a controller which could store and do the complex task of matching fingerprints using some algorithm...??

i m novice to controllers ..so plz help me in choosing one....!!

also can the same task be done with SBC..how feasible is that ...considering cost n everthing....
